Scientific research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy has been stuck in sea ice off the coast of Antarctica - 185 kilometres east of Dumont D'Urville - since Christmas Day. The ship is carrying 74 people, including scientists, tourists and crew. They are said to be in good spirits with ample food supplies. Russia said on Monday Chinese ship the Snow Dragon would send a helicopter. It had attempted a rescue by sea, but this was halted due to thick ice. A similar attempt by Australian icebreaker The Aurora Australis was also thwarted because of blizzards. Russian Ship Stuck in Ice Near Antarctica - 26 Dec Passengers on a Russian polar expedition ship off Antarctica are getting a whiter Christmas than they probably wanted. The MV Akademik Shokalskiy, with 74 people aboard, got trapped in ice and is waiting for other ships with ice-breaking capabilities to reach it, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said Wednesday. A British rescue coordination center received a satellite distress signal on Christmas morning from the Russian-flagged ship and contacted the Australian authority, which handles the Southern Ocean region where the vessel was stuck, an AMSA statement said. It pinpointed the trapped ship's location as 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont D'Urville, about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart, Tasmania. Three icebreakers were headed to help the Russian vessel, the AMSA statement said, adding that none were expected to reach it before Friday. Expeditions Online, a polar booking agent for the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, said on its website that the ship got stuck "part way through her Australasian Antarctic Expedition towards Mawson's Hut at Cape Denison." "According to reports, nobody is in present danger and three nearby icebreakers are being sent to assist," the Expeditions Online website said. It described the ship as "a fully ice-strengthened expedition vessel" for working in polar regions. "This class of vessel is world-renowned for polar exploration, because of its strength, maneuverability and small passenger numbers," the company's website said. Cape Farewell Climate Change Documentary
The climate is changing faster at the poles than anywhere else on earth, and the Arctic has been called
“the barometer of the world’s health.”
In September 2008, the British Council selected 28 high school students from Canada, India, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom for an Arctic expedition to observe evidence of climate change.
The students on the Cape Farewell Youth Expedition represented their communities and teams of students
from their schools.
The British Council in Canada assembled a remarkable team of artists and scientists to mentor the students.
Aboard the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, they sailed from
Iceland, skirting the southern tip of Greenland to Canada’s Baffin Island. Working on science projects
in climatology, geomorphology, oceanography and biogeography alongside dance, music, painting and filmmaking, the students saw a picture of a changing world.
The expedition members observed clear signs of glacial retreat and temperatures well above normal.
The students kept in touch with their schools by blogging and making films with the help of the onboard film crew. In addition to recording scientific data, students captured what they saw and what they felt in paint, words and music.
They also visited Inuit settlements, to see how northern people live. The most moving moment for many students was the realisation that these people, who live very simply and leave a very small carbon footprint, will be the first to pay the price for our global carbon waste.

Akademik Shokalskiy passengers rescued
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A helicopter rescued all 52 passengers from a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice since Christmas Eve after weather conditions finally cleared enough for the operation Thursday. The Chinese helicopter carried the scientists and tourists from the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy in groups of 12 to an Australian icebreaker, said the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Coordination Centre, which oversaw the rescue. The Aurora Australis will now take the passengers to the Australian island state of Tasmania, a journey expected to last two weeks. "I think everyone is relieved and excited to be going on to the Australian icebreaker and then home," expedition leader Chris Turney told The Associated Press by satellite phone from the Antarctic. All 22 crew members stayed with the icebound vessel, which is not in danger of sinking and has weeks' worth of supplies on board. They will wait until the ice that surrounds the ship breaks up. The eagerly anticipated rescue came after days of failed attempts to reach the vessel. Blinding snow, strong winds, fog and thick sea ice forced rescuers to turn back time and again. Three icebreakers were dispatched to try and crack their way through the ice surrounding the ship, but all failed. The Aurora came within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the ship Monday, but fierce winds and snow forced it to retreat to open water. On Thursday, it appeared the weather had thwarted yet another rescue attempt. The helicopter was originally going to airlift the passengers to the Chinese icebreaker on which it is based, with a barge then ferrying them to the Aurora. But sea ice prevented the barge from reaching the Snow Dragon icebreaker, and the maritime authority said the operation would have to be delayed. A last-minute change in plans allowed the rescue to go ahead. The passengers were instead flown to an ice floe next to the Aurora and then taken by a small boat to the Australian ship, Turney said. The Akademik Shokalskiy, which left New Zealand on Nov. 28, got stuck after a blizzard pushed the sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place about 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) south of Hobart, Tasmania. The scientific team on board had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1913 voyage to Antarctica. Turney had hoped to continue the trip if an icebreaker managed to free the ship. Despite his disappointment over the expedition being cut short, he said his spirits remained high. "I'm a bit sad it's ended this way," he said. "But we got lots and lots of great science done." China has an interest in Antarctica, with the growing scientific power recently beginning construction on its fourth Antarctic research base. Beijing was criticized for providing modest aid to the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan in November, and was accused of letting politics influence its response. =================================== Science, Transportation, MV Akademik Shokalskiy, Passengers On Ship Trapped In Antarctica To Be Rescued, antarctica, Antarctica Ice Rescue, AP, Passengers Ship Rescue, Ship Stranded Antarctica, Ship Trapped Antarctic Ice, Ship Trapped Antarctica- published: 02 Jan 2014

Trapped Antarctic Crew and Passengers Celebrate New Year
Tourists and scientists aboard a Russian ship trapped for eight days in ice off Antarctica on Tuesday (December 31) composed a special song to celebrate New Year. A video uploaded on the internet shows around a dozen people inside a tent erected on the deck of the ship singing about their plight. "Hi everyone, this is the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. We're on top of the Akademik Shokalskiy in the tent and we're just about to enter 2014 and here's the anthem of the expedition," said Chris Turney, a Professor of Climate Change at the University of New South Wales. He posted his videos on his YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/christurney/videos The Akademik Shokalskiy, trapped since December 24 about 100 nautical miles east of a French Antarctic station, Dumont D'Urville, and about 1,500 nautical miles south of Tasmania, welcomes the New Year at 1100 GMT, two hours ahead of Sydney. Their song discussed the failed rescue attempts that have been made to move the ship itself, as well as efforts to evacuate the crew and passengers. "Lots of ships around us now, boats at our stern and boats at our bow. Up in the air the Chinese came, flew around once and left again. The French dropped by but couldn't get near. Bloody great shame we are still stuck here," they sang. A helicopter on board a nearby Chinese icebreaker was on standby after an Australian icebreaker on Monday (December 30) failed to reach the ship, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said on Tuesday. Rescuers planned to move all of the 52 passengers from the ship to the Chinese vessel, the Snow Dragon, with most crew expected to stay on the Russian ship, AMSA said. The Chinese ship got within sight of the Akademik Shokalskiy on Saturday (December 28), but turned back after failing to break the ice, which was more than 3 metres (10 feet) deep in places. Passengers will be transferred from the Snow Dragon to Australia's Antarctic supply ship, the Aurora Australis. With 24 hours of daylight, passengers have been told the evacuation could start at any time, though their song suggested any successful aid could still be a way away. "Aurora Australis came roaring in but the ice was thick where they thought it was thin. They withdrew to the edge to consider their plan. Really determined to the very last man," they sang. "The way through the pack was far from clear. So, bloody great shame we are still stuck here. Stuck in Antarctica, stuck in Antarctica," they continued. Revelries were to be kept in check in case passengers and crew had to leave at any moment if the snow and wind cleared.- published: 31 Dec 2013

A huge thanks to the Australian, Chinese and French teams for all their help in extricating the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 2013-14 from the MV Akademik Shokalskiy. The following short movie shows the evacuation to the Aurora australis over the 16 miles of sea ice with some fantastic aerial views.
